Be a Fashion Superhero

If you are anything like me, deciding what to wear for the day leaves you standing in your closet staring blankly at the racks, thinking, I have nothing to wear, no matter how many clothing items are staring back at you. Let's put a new perspective on our dilemma and try a different approach. Let's dress for the day we want to have.

Here is what we know - wearing something you love certainly alters your mindset. The clothing and accessories you choose are how you present yourself to those around you. You are aware of others' reactions to you. Wearing clothes that make you feel confident will also make you feel empowered. A well-tied silk scarf, a pair of heels, and bright colors are all expressions of the self. When you get positive feedback on your appearance, you feel happier. Clothing communicates who you are. A great quote from Marilyn Monroe that still rings true today states, "High heels make a woman 25% more dominant, 50% more self-secure, and 100% more sexy."

So, assuming all of this is true, here is a play-by-play of a recent day for me:

I wake up tired, my dog snored in my ear all night so I didn’t get enough sleep. It’s just a regular day at the office. I have a few appointments with clients, nothing out of the ordinary, in other words, boring. I feel like just wearing jeans and a black sweater (I call this my ‘daily uniform’ so to speak), but as I’m standing in my closet staring at racks of clothes, I decide I’m going to put my new mantra to work, dress for the day you want to have. I pull that dress out of my closet that I haven’t worn since ‘before COVID’. I find myself referring to things and situations as ‘before COVID’ and ‘after COVID’. I guess that’s just the new norm now. I've chosen a Vince dress. It's a black, fitted sheath that always makes me feel great. I find it comfortable yet stylish. I tie my favorite Louis Vuitton scarf around my neck and add my ‘always sensible’ Chanel black heels. What happens? My mood changes. I’m ready for the day. I leave the house, go to the office, see a couple of clients, and end up having an excellent day.

We all have to get up and get dressed no matter what we do in life. Even when you don’t care about what you are putting on, whether you have some personal hardships or professional struggles, it’s always part of your day. I like the idea that we can use ‘getting dressed’ to determine the kind of day we’d like to have. Fashion can act as a shield to the things happening in your everyday life. So, to conclude, let’s pretend we are superheroes, and we are going into our closet to put on our capes. Dress for the day you want to have. Get out there and conquer the world, or at least your corner of the world!

Fashionably,

Kristen
