This One’s For the Men

I usually blog about women’s fashion, however, this one is for the men! I play golf with quite a few men, and many of my best friends are men, so I feel it’s time to address men’s style.

Okay, guys, you are aware of how much effort and thought your wife or girlfriend puts into looking great for date night. It’s high time for you guys to be expected to give the same attention to detail and put in the work it takes to look your best. When your date looks at you, she’ll be proud of the effort you put into looking great for her. More importantly, make the other ladies in the room jealous that their man doesn’t look as exceptional as you do.

Let’s detail a few staple items you’ll need in your closet. Brown brogues are essential. There is some leeway here since Covid made everything more casual. Think Wolf and Shepherd (Gronk’s favorite shoe) and the crossover loafer or derby. Secondly, a great pair of dark denim jeans, not slouchy or distressed, just a nice pair of dark blue jeans that can carry you from day to night. Adriano Goldschmied (AG) is a great reference for this staple. Men should also have a pair of grey and navy slacks. I hate the word slacks, let's say trousers. These are the most versatile colors. Make sure they are altered to fit you perfectly and are not so long that they puddle on top of your shoes. Let the other guys wear the chinos to an upscale lunch or dinner party, but you are going as the guy that people view as stylish.

Add to this, a light blue dress shirt. Everyone wears a white dress shirt. Frankly, they are overdone. Be more stylish and earn style points with a crisp light blue. My favorite staple in this blog is a zip sweater or polo. We are all used to buttons, so get out there and be different with a zipper sweater. This look is understated but different enough to get some acknowledging nods.

Another must-have staple is a watch with a metal band. You don’t have to spend thousands on a Rolex, however, just get a good quality metal-banded watch. That metal can catch light from across a room and is very noticeable. Lastly, a sports jacket is imperative. Important, guys: please buy a quality sports jacket and have it altered to fit you perfectly!! Nothing is more annoying than seeing a guy who is actually trying to be stylish but didn’t take the time to make sure his clothes fit properly. Sleeves too long, jacket too tight, you know someone who wears this jacket. Alterations are a very inexpensive way to look expensive.

Okay, so let's put it all together: Brown crossover loafers, dark denim, a light blue dress shirt with a navy long-sleeve zip sweater, and a camel-colored sports jacket to finish off the look. Every day is a great day to make a change for the better. Dress with intention. As Rachel Zoe says, “Style is a way to say who you are without having to speak.”

Fashionably,

Kristen
