Earth Day
Today is Earth Day. A very important day to really think about what it means and what we can do to be more committed to making a positive difference for the planet. I want to implore everyone reading this to recognize the environmental impact of fast fashion and the importance of prolonging the lifecycle of clothing items. With websites like Temu and Shein it's easy and cheap to buy current trends, however, those trends change by the minute and those items end up in our landfills. Fast fashion has completely revolutionized the apparel industry, but not for the better. With every purchase of these items, there is an industry stripping the Earth of its limited resources and exploiting the labor force that works in its garment factories. This huge amount of waste characterizes this industry as it depletes healthy soil, contaminates our fresh water sources, pollutes the air we breathe, defiles our oceans, destroys forests and damages eco-systems.
Educate yourself about sustainable clothing. Buy less and shop for quality over quantity. Choose brands that are manufactured in their own community and connected to the place, people behind them, local economy and environment. (ie. Brunello Cucinelli)
Buy Secondhand clothing. As the owner of a luxury resale store, I am amazed how many people bring me items with the tags still attached. I would like to thank all 102 of my consignors for not adding to landfills, realizing their items still have great value and gently loving their handbags, shoes and clothing.
Shop mindfully. Instead of succumbing to impulse buys and trends, adopt a more mindful approach to shopping. Before making a purchase, ask yourself if you truly need the item and consider its long-term value. Opt for timeless pieces made from high-quality materials that are designed to last, rather than disposable fashion that quickly goes out of style.
Post a picture of yourself wearing a sustainable garment or carrying a pre-loved handbag and tag us! We celebrate you today as we celebrate our planet, our home. Understanding the true cost of fast fashion can motivate you to make more informed decisions as a consumer.
Happy Earth Day!
